AP*- Asia Pacific Internet Organizations
AP* Mission/Vision
AP* aims to coordinate and liaise across the Asia Pacific (APAC) Internet organizations in collaborating and achieving our common and respective goals on technical operations and coordination, as well as global Internet issues as it relates to the technical functioning of the Internet in the APAC region.
AP* Objectives
- To coordinate across the community of APAC Internet organizations on identifying shared priorities towards strengthening the technical operations of the Internet.
- To foster meaningful dialogue and exchange information on key initiatives and updates across the APAC Internet organizations.
- To provide a platform for discussions on a common position or understanding on ongoing global Internet topics, such as governance and research/education, and its potential impacts to the APAC region.
- To facilitate resource coordination across APAC Internet organizations towards effectively achieving common goals.
What We Do
- The AP* community gathers twice a year to discuss recent developments and updates impacting the Internet’s technical operations.
- Where applicable, the community convenes intersessionally to provide relevant updates and/or form a common understanding/rough consensus on selected issues that may impact the technical functioning of the Internet in the APAC region.
Who Should Attend
APAC Internet organizations, including but not limited to:
- Leaders of Internet organizations in the region (e.g. APNIC, ICANN, ISOC and chapters)
- Leaders of Network Operators Group (regional and local NOGs)
- Leaders of Internet Service Provider(ISP)/Internet Exchange (IX) associations
- Leaders of Computer Emergency Response Team (regional and local CERTs)
- Leaders of country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) operators + Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD)
- Leaders of Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) & Research and Education Network (national RENs)
AP* Structure
- Steering group: APNOG, ISOC, ICANN, APNIC, APNG, APIX, APAN
- AP* Meetings: steering group + “who should attend” list + invited contributors
AP* Meeting Format
- On-site meeting– currently default twice a year, with option for additional meetings
- First meeting tagged to APRICOT Conference
- Second meeting tagged to APNIC Conference
- Potential third meeting as needed, co-locating to other meeting in the region depending on specific objective and funding availability
- Intersessional virtual meetings may be required if a specific topic requires discussion prior to the next AP* Meeting
- Mix of breakout/interactive discussions on global Internet topics as it relates to the APAC region, and updates/presentations focusing on technical coordination and Internet resiliency topics
- Networking session– depending on the meeting and funding availability, the networking session as part of AP* meetings could be lunch, dinner, and/or drinks. Relevant information will be shared with registered attendees for each meeting.
AP* Meeting Registration Fees
- A registration fee of USD25 per meeting will be charged for on-site attendees of the AP* meeting.
- Meeting sponsors will receive 1 free ticket
- Fees for invited guest speakers will be waived for their speaking segment [Note: If guest speakers would like to attend other segments throughout the day, registration fee will still apply]
- Registration fees will be applied to relevant logistical aspects for organizing of AP* meetings, coffee breaks, networking session (as appropriate), and as back-up funds for incidental fees such (e.g. venue cancellation fees)
- AP* Meeting Secretariat will be managing receipt of funds, and will provide update on accounting at each AP* meeting
- Registration fees will start to apply starting AP* meeting at APRICOT2026 (Feb 2026, Jakarta)
AP* Co-Chairs Terms and Roles
- Current AP* co-chairs: Alban Kwan and Yien-Chyn Tan (appointed since APRICOT2025 Feb 2025, Petaling Jaya)
- Co-chairs will assume the role for 2 years i.e. 4 AP* Meetings
- Rotation will stagger to ensure continuity i.e. 1 co-chair will remain as the other changes
- Newly appointed co-chairs should ideally have attended at least 2 AP* Meetings previously, and holds strong facilitation and chairing skills
- Co-chairs’ main roles and responsibilities are to:
- Develop the AP* meeting program (including any intersessional meetings) and chair the AP* Meetings
- Call for and chair meetings with steering group members as required
AP* Local Hosts
- The local host for the main conference in which AP* Meeting is tagged to will be invited to join the AP* Meeting
- The local host will be invited to share presentation/updates focusing on technical sharing and interesting Internet related developments at the local economy
- The local host may also choose to participate in or lead any interactive/breakout discussions if interested
AP* Secretariat
- Current Secretariat: DotAsia Organization (with support from APNIC)
- Secretariat’s main roles and responsibilities are to:
- Support the co-chairs on overall organizing of AP* Meetings
- Support logistical coordination of each AP* Meeting (e.g. working with main conference hosts, updating website, sending mailers on AP* Meeting updates, managing registration processes)
- Support on identifying potential opportunities for a 3rd meeting of the year (if needed)
